The dashed lines are perforations made for those who wanted to tear out a response card and participate in responding to the prompt provided. They would then be encouraged to send the card back to us with the provided envelope. We used a holographic pearl vinyl that both inspired our color scheme and embodied the diversity of all our participants. Because of its natural fluidity, we felt it embodied all genders, sexual orientations, races, and ages.
The audience was encouraged to interact with our exhibition by responding to prompts on the cards provided. These are scanned responses from (sense)uality participants.
(sense)uality is a project that encourages individuals to engage in personal reflection and candid sharing of intimate interactions regarding the all–encompassing topics of gender and sexuality. Because of the perpetual, albeit unnecessary, social stigma surrounding these subjects, many people are often too uncomfortable, embarrassed, or apprehensive to address them openly. (sense)uality encourages cisgender, transgender, gender non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals to share their perspective through anonymous written submissions. The physical act of written reflection, coupled with the anonymous submission of one’s response, is reminiscent of the sense of privacy, intimacy, and confessional writing associated with keeping a diary, which further encourages participants to truthfully and openly share their experience. Using the submitted content, we designed a publication presenting all of the gathered responses from a period of six months. The publication not only acts as an intimate, collective chronicle of sex, sexuality, and gender as universal human experiences, but also emboldens our audience to talk about their own sexual experiences more unabashedly, and more often.
